The Troop 39 Cooking Extravaganza

In November, 1996, Troop 39's campout theme was camp cooking, featuring a Troop Feast on Saturday night as the highlight of the weekend. These are pictures from that campout, held at Camp Kahler near Rochester, MN.

The fire crew, the Eagle Patrol, at work at the fireplace. One match??

As you can see, there was already plenty of snow on the ground.

The cooks are gathered around the fire, keeping a watchful eye on the progress of the Dutch oven dishes.

Those big, white splotches in the picture are snowflakes... big, juicy, wet snowflakes. It made for interesting pot-tending.

The Troop Feast menu included:
  • Dutch oven Deep-Dish Pizza
  • Dutch oven Lasagne
  • Brownies baked in Dutch Oven
  • Killer Chili cooked in a Dutch oven
  • Corn Fritters
  • Baked potatoes (foil wrapped, with onion slices)
  • Tossed Salad
  • Kool-Aid
  • Coffee
  • Hot Chocolate
The Dutch oven deep-dish pizza, baked to perfection. The only fault was that there wasn't enough of it!

The foil cylinders in the background are the baked potatoes being kept warm on top of the Dutch ovens.

Well fed and ready to hit the sack. ASM Bob R. is a die-hard cold weather camper.

Everyone ate heartily and enjoyed the meal. The biggest surprise was that everything was ready to eat at the same time! The food was excellent, yet easy to prepare. The Scouts learned that meals can be good, without being difficult and time consuming to prepare. We also learned a lot about using a Dutch oven.

Breakfast the next morning was a worthy companion to the troop feast. Menu items included Cinamon Rolls and Farmers Breakfast casserole, done in Dutch ovens, of course, and French toast.
We don't always rough it, though. This is the cook crew for the December Advancement "campout" at the Dakota County Spring Lake Park youth lodge. Tough duty, if you can get it.
