Cooking and Sanitation
In this session we:
Prepare and cook dinner
Talk about the types of foods that are suitable for
Webelos overnight campouts.
Discuss camping health and safety, including:
Safe
water
Sanitation,
personal and kitchen
Campsite
cleanliness.
Prepare ahead of time; collect fire materials and
start soon enough to have coals to cook on.
Cook over coals, not flames.
Fire lay should support cooking pots/pans.
(Types of fires should have been taught in
firebuilding?)
Discuss Stoves, utensils and other camp cooking
equipment.
Use wood or charcoal fires whenever possible.
Fuel
sources available, fires permitted, LNT factors.
Boys are not permitted to use liquid fuels. Adults
only should adjust/setup stoves.

Discuss Foil cooking advantages
lightweight,
durable, and low in cost.
Can
be prepared ahead of time; part or all.

Should use heavy duty foil. Double thickness of
regular weight is ok though.

Provide ingredients and prepare. Add tblsp of water

Tested water only for drinking.
Piped, well, and spring
water is usually safe, but check it first.
If in doubt bring water from home.
1 Gallon per person for a
weekend.
Keep in closed containers.
Factor in cooking needs.

Webelos activities.

Procedures
that make dishwashing easier:

Coat
pots with liquid soap before cooking over a campfire.
·
Line
pans/pots with foil.
·
Use
paper plates and cups
2.
The
Smart Cook puts two pots of water on the fire as soon as the cooking is done -
one for washing dishes and the other for rinsing.
3.
Dish
washing Demo.

Scrape
dishes before putting them in dishwater.
·
Use
hot water for cleaning pots, pans, and utensils.
·
Sterilize
with boiling water and let air-dry.
·
Use
a sanitizing agent in the rinse water (bleach)
4.
Show
- dunking net or tongs for rinsing.
5.
Explain
dishwater disposal.
6.
Paper
towel holder on display.
1.
Burn
whatever will burn. Allwo wet garbage to dry next to fire first.
2.
Wash
out empty jars/cans. Flatten cans, Put in the trash can or take home.
3.
Bury
nothing. Animals will dig it up.

Camp at sites with toilet facilities. Webelos Scouts
aren’t ready for digging latrines and using them., (and most of their parents
probable aren’t either.)
Clean Hands are important!!

One Rule:
Leave No Trace
1.
Be
sure fire is out cold.
2.
Dismantle
the firelay, dispose of ashes, and scatter extra firewood.
3.
Pick
up all litter, even the smallest pieces.
4.
Inspect
the area to be sure it is clean.
5.
Dispose
of all garbage properly, or take it home.
